Nillumbik Council: Fund netball facilities in Hurstbridge!

Nillumbik Shire Council has failed sporting women and girls of Hurstbridge and district.

Council has known for years that it’s simply not good enough, for the only first division football and netball club in Nillumbik, to have the worst rooms in the Shire. No dedicated female friendly change rooms for football, cricket or netballers, and not even an accessible bathroom for patrons.

And for years, netballers have lobbied council to fix inadequate, non-compliant and unsafe netball courts. I’ve done all I can to support them, but Council keeps dropping the ball.

Timeline:

  • October 2018 – the Andrews Labor Government allocates $150,000 towards a modest upgrade to female friendly facilities at the Hurstbridge clubrooms. Two years on, the money remains unspent.
  • February 2020 – Nillumbik Council applies to Sport & Recreation Victoria for $375,000 to upgrade courts and lighting. I strongly backed the application along with Netball Victoria. Nillumbik failed to lodge all required documentation, so the application scored 0% in a competitive funding round.
  • September 2020 – Nillumbik Council receives $705,000 from the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund for a $1.7 million project to upgrade sporting facilities in Graysharps Road, Hurstbridge.

This $1.7 million project doesn’t include netball courts and lighting.

Let’s tell Council that women and girls have waited long enough for female friendly change rooms, and long enough for courts and lighting.

It’s time that Council gives Hurstbridge its fair share.

It’s time that Council gives sporting women and girls their fair share.

Therefore, this petition urges Council to expand the Graysharps Road Project to include the netball courts and lighting.
