ALL WE WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS…
Diamond Valley MPs Vicki Ward and Danielle Green have teamed up with Nillumbik sporting clubs at Victoria’s Parliament to fight for more funding for local sporting clubs and community organisations in Melbourne’s north east.
Leaders and players from the Diamond Valley Force Netball Association and the Diamond Valley Basketball Association together with Cr Grant Brooker, presented a petition to the Minister for Local Government, Marlene Kairouz on Thursday, seeking funding for improvements to the Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre and Diamond Creek Netball facilities.
The North East Local MPs have also called on the Minister for Local Government to play Santa this year and deliver some much needed Christmas presents to Nillumbik through the Growing Suburbs Fund, to provide upgrades to sporting and recreational facilities.
The Members for Eltham and Yan Yean who share an electorate border in Diamond Creek have timed their contributions to the Parliament, speaking after each other supporting similar projects, putting questions, adjournments and statements together throughout this week to support local sporting clubs and community organisations.
This concerted effort comes while at the same time Ms Green and Ms Ward have criticised the Nillumbik Shire Council for the poor quality of its sports funding applications to the Victorian Government and the Mayor’s obsession with side issues. Ms Green was scathing of the Mayor Peter Clarke for not delivering on the core ‘bricks and mortar’ type projects that matter most to local residents and instead going on a rate-payer funded Christmas splurge of $150,000 for Christmas lights and tinsel.
Member for Eltham Vicki Ward has pushed for funding for the Eltham Central Precinct Community Sports Hub in a recent adjournment in the Parliament, Ms Green raised with the Minister the importance of upgrades to Marngrook Oval. Both MPs have been petitioning, meeting and telling anyone who will listen about the need for funding for the Diamond Creek Netball Pavilion, Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre and the Diamond Creek-Hurstbridge Trail.
Quotes attributable to Danielle Green, Member for Yan Yean
“I have been critical of Nillumbik Shire’s inability to identify, plan, fund and deliver vital sporting and community projects in recent months and for good reason. That is why Vicki and I have teamed up with local sporting clubs and gone directly to the Minister for the funding so we can get the upgrades our communities deserve”
Quote attributable to Vicki Ward, Member for Eltham
“I want to thank our wonderful local netballers and basketballers who are working so hard for the benefit of our community. Improving local sporting facilities is so important in Nillumbik and I am proud that our clubs step up when the hard work needs to be done.”
