More than 200 first-time parents across the City of Whittlesea and surrounding districts have already been provided with the essentials they need to help guide them through the first few months and years of their child’s life.

State Members of Parliament Danielle Green and Bronwyn Halfpenny visited The Northern Hospital today and joined Chief Executive Siva Sivarajah to make a special delivery of baby bundles to first-time parents.

With around 4000 babies born a year at the Northern Hospital, the free baby-bundles will help new parents build safe sleeping practices and support their child’s learning and development through regular reading and playtime.

Valued at $150, the bundle comes with a teething ring, nappy bag, safe sleeping bag, a cotton wrap, first aid kit, baby sunhat, toothbrush and a grow suit.

A booklet developed in collaboration with Raising Children Network provides vital information on child health, safety and learning and emergency contacts.

There are also four picture books for various stages of a child’s development. Almost 1,200 people had their say on which books should be selected for the bundle, with the public nominating 332 different books.

A panel of experts in childhood literacy and development decided on the winning books, all by Victorian authors:

  • Baby Days by Nicola Philp
  • Ten Little Owls by Renee Treml
  • Puddle Hunters by Kirsty Murray and Karen Blair
  • Gumtree Buddies, a soft pram book produced by Tiger Tribe

Ms Green and Ms Halfpenny welcomed the initiative, as well as a new parenting centre for Whittlesea, as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s $213.7 million plan to provide parents with the information, extra support and care their family needs.

One of nine across the state, the brand-new Whittlesea parenting centre will help make sure new mums and dads can get the advice they need, including support with sleeping, feeding and extra care for babies with additional needs.

Delivering on our commitment to create five new dedicated children’s emergency departments, this year’s budget also kick-starts planning on the new dedicated new space at The Northern Hospital giving local parents the peace of mind that their kids will get the calm and compassionate care in the moments that matter the most.
