FOGGY MOUNTAIN MUSIC STUDENTS SHINE BRIGHT

Local students have become recording stars thanks to an exciting music project supported by the Andrews Labor Government.

Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Victoria Danielle Green today announced a $10,000 grant which has supported the much-loved Foggy Mountain Music Program to create its first album.

For five years, local country music legends David and Merelyn Carter, who perform as multi award-winning act Carter & Carter have worked alongside the Foggy Mountain Music Festival team to write songs with students from Kinglake, Middle Kinglake, Kinglake West, Toolangi, Flowerdale and Strathewen primary schools.

Each year, students have gone on to showcase their talents by performing at the Festival and this year the program has taken a new step by recording its first album.

David, Merelyn and a professional creative team have worked with more than 400 students to create the 12-track album. Students have been involved in all aspects of the creative process – from singing and recording, to creating behind-the-scenes videos and artwork.

The Music Program was created as part of community recovery efforts following the 2009 Victorian bushfires. It aims to use the performing arts as a healing tool for students, building resilience and supporting their wellbeing as well as helping them to build new creative skills.

The album was launched at a special concert at Kinglake Ranges Community Centre on 14 November with plans for further performances at community events throughout the rest of the year.

The annual Foggy Mountain Music Festival is an important part of the Kinglake community’s events calendar, supporting local artists, increasing community engagement and promoting the region.
