Walktober is here

The school holidays have begun, to all the kids out there enjoy your break and to all the parents out there enjoy some extra time with your kids (and good luck).

But talking about the school holidays I learnt some facts that surprised me:

  • Only 19% of 15-17 yo Australian kids get the recommended 60 mins of daily exercise.
  • 29% of kids get sedentary screen time of only 2 hours per day.
  • 22-25% of parents get their recommended 30 minutes of exercise 5 days per week.

But there are some great initiatives that the community can use to combat these issues. For example during the school holidays everyone notices how much quieter and less congested our roads are. Let’s all give Walktober a crack by having the kids walk to school (even part of the way) so they and we adults can get the exercise we need and at the same time enjoy less congested local streets.

Walktober could be the simple answer – 31 minutes of physical activity for each of the 31 days of October.
